Dear Shareholders,
We are reaching out to inform you about planned updates to our water system. California law (SB 552) requires all water systems to meter residential service connections by 2032 to ensure that water systems are prepared in the case of another drought. Governor Newsom has made money available through the Department of Water Resources Small Supplier Water Conservation Assistance Program to assist small water systems with the installation of residential water meters.
Information about the Program is available on the California Department of Water Resources website at https://water.ca.gov/Programs/Water-Use-And-Efficiency/ The-Small-Suppliers-Water-Conservation-Assistance-Program and on the California Association of Mutual Water Companies website at ttps://calmutuals.org/small-system-water-conservation-assistance-program.
Glen Martin Mutual Water Company (GMMWC) has been invited to participate in the program based on our drought vulnerability. Our board of directors has accepted the invitation to participate in the program to help our water system meet this upcoming state requirement. Residential meters will be installed in the fall of 2025. We anticipate installation of meters at each GMMWC residential service before 2026. The installation will be facilitated by the California Association of Mutual Water Companies with support from a trusted contractor, Sierra Construction. In some cases, access to shareholder/customer property may be needed and there may be short periods of time when your water is temporarily shut off. We will be sure to alert you to these needs. GMMWC shareholders are eligible to receive free low-water use toilets and showerheads. The program also provides GMMWC shareholders with the opportunity to replace high water use toilets and showerheads with more efficient alternatives.
Currently, GMMWC is not changing our water rate structure. We do, however, plan to engage in a rate study to ensure that we have the funds needed to manage our system, make regular improvements to our water system, and put enough money away in the case of any emergencies. The study will include consideration of a tiered rate structure that ensures that everyone pays for their fair share of the water they use. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact me by email at carrie@glenmartinmutualwaterco.com, please also feel welcome to attend our annual shareholder's meeting this October 1st at 6:30pm at Station 98 in Angelus Oaks. We look forward to seeing you there.
